Welcome to my shop! My work is hand-made on the potter’s wheel with either porcelain or stoneware, glazed and fired to 2210 F. I work in two particular ways: first and primarily, I use a wax-resist design technique (akin to batik only with glazes instead of fabric) in patterns or abstractions to obtain vitality and depth between colors and surfaces. The glossier layer of the first glaze contrasts to the more satin matt surface of the second layer, creating a sense of seeing through, looking into, and a small but vital creation of mystery happens. The second
way I work is by painting lively sea creatures with colored slips on leatherhard clay, drawing through the slips (a technique called sgraffito), then bisque firing and using a clear glaze over the images. In these pieces I am interested in expressing gesture and liveliness thought the painting and drawing, in collusion with the form.

I do not make a “line” of anything, but do work in series. Mug shapes and sizes change with time. It is important to me that the work evolves and grows and I love making new discoveries in glazes and forms.

I make my own glazes. Sometimes materials I’ve been using for years suddenly become discontinued (very frustrating for a potter!) Bottom line: if you are looking to match something you bought from me years ago, it may not be an option.

All the work is lead-free, dishwasher and microwave safe. If you would like to see more work, I would encourage you to check out my online gallery, https://charliecummingsgallery.com/.

Enjoy!

Shipping

Each piece is one-of-a-kind and will be marked SOLD when it is no longer available. I will replenish stock when I see it is needed and have new work to put up. Although I make every effort to photograph my work as truthfully as possible, I know that nothing is quite the same as holding the piece of pottery in your hands. If you are not happy with the piece you receive, it can be exchanged or returned within 10 days. Most of the time I can ship within a few days of the purchase. However if I am out of town it could be up to a week or so until the piece goes out. I will email you if there will be a delay of more than a few days. Shipping will be USPS, priority mail for smaller items and first class for larger items. My shipping calculator is set up for domestic US purchases only. If you live outside of the United States and wish to ship, please email me for shipping options.
